Making the Right Choice

This guide has been created to help you choose the right uPVC Windows, Doors and Conservatories for your property

• Choose a window style which will enhance both the look and value of your property. Think carefully about window proportions, the colour you select, the configuration of any opening lights and even the addition of coloured or leaded glass. Your installer should be able to advise you and show you photos of previous installations in properties similar to yours. View the Galleries on this site to see example installations.
• Check that you have selected the level of security for your uPVC Windows and Doors which meets your needs. Look out for BS7950 or PAS23/24 approval and ask your installer whether your new windows and doors have Secured by Design status.
• What type of glass do you need? It is well known that double glazing can significantly reduce heat loss from your home, but triple glazing and ‘low emissivity’ glass can reduce it even further. In areas where safety is paramount toughened or laminate glass should be chosen, whilst asking for a wider gap between the panes of glass can help improve sound insulation.
• Consider adding authentic touches to your new windows, either to match the existing windows which are being replaced or to ensure they are in keeping with your property. Additional features available include Georgian Bars, arched head inserts and sash horns.
• Ask your installer about the accreditations for the uPVC Windows and Doors system they are using. REHAU profile systems hold BS7412 for weather performance and air leakage, in fact REHAU systems are one of the few to be tested for severe weather conditions. REHAU systems are also kitemarked to BS EN12608 for extrusion standards which incorporates BS EN ISO 9001 for company procedures ensuring that the profile for your new windows have been manufactured in the UK to the highest possible standards.
• Have you considered the option of coloured windows – a coloured or woodgrain finish can add individuality to your home. If you chose a woodgrain or coloured effect to the exterior you can still have a white interior or chose another colour finish to enhance the interior of your home. • Before any work starts check whether planning permission is required. If you live in a Conservation Area, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or in a List Building you are likely to require planning permission to change your windows and doors, or to add a conservatory. Check the regulations with the Planning Department of your Local Authority. Your installer will also be able to provide advice on this issue.
• Replacement windows are now covered by Building Regulations, in particular Part L relating to their thermal efficiency. This means that the installer you choose to install your double glazed windows should either be registered under the self-assessment FENSA scheme or able to obtain approval direct from the Building Control Department for your installation.
• If you are adding a uPVC Conservatory to your property choose a style and size which is appropriate for your home. It is a good idea to visit showrooms to get an idea of size and scale and if possible ask your installer if you can see a previous installation similar to what you are planning.
• When selecting the company to manufacturer and/or install your new windows and doors or your new uPVC conservatory make sure you ask for recommendations and always ask to see examples of work already carried out by the company. Make sure you choose a reputable supplier.
